Social innovation – providing support for older adults: New understanding and identifying opportunities through ethnographic research

There are a number of challenges which older adults face in terms of living independently. The objective of this module of research was to identify potential opportunities to encourage and enable older adults to live independently for longer.

Working for an international outsourcing, service delivery and business process company we were commissioned to carry out a module of ethnographic research to provide a detailed understanding of the issues facing older adults in the UK.

Working with five households with participants aged from their early sixties through to their late seventies, ethnographic research painted a detailed picture of the challenges facing older adults.

This included issues of mobility through to informal and formal support required, financial security, health and wellbeing, service expectations and their experiences of services.

The research is being used to help identify opportunities to promote independent living and new service delivery including tele-healthcare.
